Book Review: Voyages into the Unknown

Bruce Moen’s book, Voyages into the Unknown is deep and profound, with it’s assay into the bottomless mysteries one might imagine when you dare to dive into Afterlife exploration.

Sometimes, the word for word familiarity was uncanny with things I have experienced–other times, passages or terms were, at least initially, way over my head. Yet, Bruce’s writing kept me intrigued from start to finish–though I’m not entirely finished, as there are more books in this series to eagerly inspect.

For those of us who love fiction based on true stories, enjoy deep and riveting mysteries, or simply have a passion to dig through the numerous tangles within our Connections, I believe you’ll find this a treasured book.

I have enjoyed the challenge and stretch Voyages has brought to my ever evolving consciousness.

Consciousness, as a topic and in all of its aspects, beckons me to study it further, not out of mere curiosity as much as out of this fantastical question of “where do I stop and you begin?” –and because of my mother, aunt, and grandmother all suffered with Alzheimer’s dis-ease. I am a sleuth of sorts, always and in ALL ways forward-thinking to try and solve the riddle of why we’re here.

I came to know Bruce’s writing through his beloved wife, Pharon. And I desired to finish her husband’s book before embarking on a Sacred Celtic Journey with my husband (a journey that Pharon, Patricia McGivern, Kim Cintio, and several more would also join).

I met Pharon on my Sedona journey, and we have stayed connected since. But, I had not gotten to know Bruce before his passing, or crossing over beyond The Veil. And I wanted to learn about him and his Afterlife exploration from having attended his memorial service, or Celebration of Life.

In order to live a wholly vibrant life, I feel we must continually expand our awareness. And when I saw several people from Bruce’s past Afterlife exploration attend his service (from as far away as Japan), I knew I must read his books. I love reading books, but reading books by those I know (or know their family member) is a real thrill!


I don’t want to reveal too much, but I thought you might be interested in a few inside peeks to see what engaged me so much!

I’ll share three relevancies or synchronicities that struck a chord within me as I read, Voyages into the Unknown:

1) “Bits and pieces that ring true to your own experience…” (Bits and Pieces was the name of an establishment in my hometown of which, I can’t explain much about except it intrigued me and I looked forward to going there for years. When I was finally old enough to get in, it had closed for business.)

2) “All the events of my life seem so woven together and interconnected…” (I probably don’t need to explain why this sentence resonated with me, but if I do, read this.)

3) A powerful explanation about reoccurring dreams and how many times we remember these dreams 30 or 40 years later!

Believe it or not – a key to healing

Bruce details in his book a question that I have pondered for years. Why some people can have spontaneous healing in their bodies, yet others not–and while I agree none of us can really know how much Faith a person has, I dare say that I’ve known many who displayed great Faith (especially believing for others), yet continued to personally suffer. A key answer to this perplexing conundrum is put forth in Voyages–and it relates to how each must believe within our own frame of reference for the body to accept the healing!!!

Oh, snap! Natural Health and Wellness is big business

In 2005, when I began writing a holistic, natural health and wellness book, I set a Google alert for simply, “natural health and wellness.” And I’d get an email from the alert every few days with one or two results.

But yesterday, I realized the email often contains twenty or more results!

In the years I’ve been writing my book (and blog articles because everything changes so fast), the industry has taken off in a big way–and I’m seeing an even larger market for my book–it’s always been needed, but I didn’t think many people would be ready for it.

I am sure one of the reasons that I’ve lagged in finishing my book was due to a kind of lackluster interest. I mean, I’d talk with people about holistic health and they’d look at me like I had three eyes. Okay, I have a third eye–that has opened up in the last five years–but that’s another post for another day.

I’d try to give family or friends advice about the alternative treatments I’d been getting, the healthy organic food and clothing options, or herbal and homeopathic remedies for colds and flu, etc. Yet, most of my attempts to help were often frowned upon, sometimes I’d even be scolded! I learned to only offer suggestions when asked. And that asking wasn’t happening with any regular frequency, so I kinda gave up.

I threw my hands in the air and decided to let them spend their money on outrageously priced health insurance premiums and co-pays. After all, it was their choice.

I sat by while family and friends underwent painful medical procedures.

I read emails and Facebook posts from them. I did the best I could to remain compassionate and loving. But, I knew deep down, I had an understanding that could help, if they’d only listen.

And then today, something happened. I caught a glimmer of hope!

Awareness is E-X-P-A-N-D-I-N-G… for the general populace–about all kinds of things!

With the boomers talking about anti-aging (and how chemically-laden skin care costs a small fortune), solar energy getting easier to acquire and afford, the buzz words of green, eco-friendly, and sustainable being used all the more, the list of chronic ills growing larger by the minute (with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease seeming to lead the way), more people (college age or boomers) living in “tiny houses” or RVs full-time to downsize, live simply ,and save money, the March against Monsanto movement gaining a strong foothold (due to the multitude of bees dying), National Geographic highlighting the massive deforestation that’s been going on for some time–for all these reasons and more–masses of people are waking up!

And many of these awake and aware folks are now looking for natural health and wellness options to ease the rising tidal wave of humongous healthcare costs–better late than never in my humble opinion!

So, among other things on my daily alert, I found such things as articles on collagen peptides as a non-surgical solution to reduce facial wrinkles, how to throw a healthy dinner party, natural health trends, how many companies now make tea tree essential oil, whole body healing products like mats and pillows, and of course the latest in nutricosmetics–yes, I’d heard of nutriceuticals a few years ago and have written blog articles about some, but nutricosmetics made from natural elements was a new term for me!

When Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Jin Shin Jyutsu, and my 660nm red light therapy go mainstream, I’ll really hoot and holler!

I mean, natural health modalities of detoxification, organic food, physical therapy, hypnosis, yoga, meditation, Pilates, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, Kinesiology, colon hydrotherapy, and essential oils are fairly common now, with insurance covering acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage therapy for certain situations.

However, it may still take some time for raw vegan food, Reflexology, the Energy medicine modalities like Theta healing, Healing Touch, Reiki, Pranic healing, past life regression, and Pranayama breathing techniques to be accepted. And other more hands on or physical approaches to wellness of Feldenkrais, Cranio-Sacral, Tai Chi, Qigong, Yamuna, herbal and Bach flower remedies, biofeedback, oxygen, chelation, and stem cell therapies to become commonplace.

Note: March 21st, 2018 The Tomah, Wisconsin VA center is offering a new Tai Chi class to help veterans find relief! Yay!!

There really are (gasp–apparently), lots of people like me out there in the world who care about all this natural stuff! Haha! Yay, finally!

I knew I’d been able to buy a lot more organic food (produce, canned, and frozen items) at our local–non-health food type–grocery store, which has been especially time-saving! But, what I hadn’t realized was just how the whole “get healthy naturally” idea has blossomed!

Someday soon it seems, I may be able to buy some of the cottage industry clothing, skin care, organic recipe ingredients, and so on from our local grocery store. For now, I’ll continue to support (in alphabetical order):

Trouble losing weight? It may not all be “in your genes”…

I’m a grand proponent of self help and the power each of us has to change anything we’re not happy about in our life.

I talk a lot about how we expand in our growth when we get to know our thoughts and focus, thus better directing our life.

I’ve been reading that overweight people might have genes that push them towards food (perhaps even cause food addiction) whether they are hungry or not, or that a lack of willpower has something to do with it, but the more I read the less I blame genes for this. Dr. Bruce Lipton teaches that our genes are only a blueprint. Something else turns our genes on or off.

You might like to know there are easy complements you can add to your daily routine to lose weight and conquer your genetic predispositions by helping your mind and body turn off those weight storing genes.

What’s more is that once you learn these tips, and DO them each day, you increase your chances of weight loss success (whatever that really means to you)!

Think about this. When you were young, were you skinny or overweight? If you were thin twenty or more years ago, why not now? Yes, it could be the food you choose, or because you sit all day, but it could be something else. Have you already tried a myriad of diets only to find the weight creeps back on?

Maybe you have chalked it up to your genes, or changing hormones.  Perhaps you’ve given up. But that doesn’t feel good, does it? It feels like you’re defeated.

So, what if I tell you that you can change your mind and accomplish weight loss, in spite of your genetic situation. And you will then be able to lose weight and keep it off — yes, maintain your weight loss! Ahh, doesn’t that feel good when you think of THAT possibility?

Just for you–sort of a holiday present, I am outlining my protocol for weight loss (and increasing health vitality/energy) for you to try one or more of these ideas as follows:

  • 15 minutes of quiet meditation every morning
  • Two 10 minute stair-climbing (walking) meditation periods during the work day
  • Intermittent fasting (incorporating raw vegetables / green juices / green smoothies with little or no fruit on fasting days and drinking protein drinks — my next article will give you a lot of information on protein powders you can try)
  • Use Emotional Freedom Technique™ (EFT) daily or as needed for will and encouragement
  • Use Jin-Shin-Jyutsu (JSJ) daily or as needed for healing of specific bodily issues
  • Practice Pilates to increase mobility, straighten the spine, enhance breathing, and lengthen/tone muscles
  • Using Energy Medicine as needed
  • Walk in nature whenever possible
  • Limit potatoes to once or twice a week – rarely with meat (following food combining principles)
  • No eating bread, pasta, or anything made from processed flour – substituting coconut flour as needed
  • No eating or drinking anything with processed sugar – substituting maple syrup, stevia, local honey, or agave as needed
  • Limit intake of beef and dairy
  • Limit processed foods – NO “fast foods”
  • Limit exposure to toxins/chemicals (no make-up or natural organic cosmetics only, no chemical coloring of hair, wear natural fiber clothing/shoes–get rid of polyester, rayon, permanent press, and those kinds of clothes, and use only natural organic products on your hair/skin)

Some studies have stated that people can lose by 146% more weight than only relying on diet and exercise by incorporating hypnosis into their routine! When you change your mind about food choices (yes, even what tastes good to you) and WANT to move your body more (doing fun things you love) you can be successful at the weight loss game!

I have personally experienced weight loss success and science is explaining why. Though hypnosis and EFT are different modalities, for me, the benefits of EFT are that it’s free — once you learn it, you can do it everyday for the rest of your life for almost any issue and experience immediate relief, and that it’s easy! I have practiced EFT while driving, in a restroom, and in bed to help me fall asleep. I love it!

The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology published a paper, “The Integration of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Into the Practice of Psychology: A Vision for the Future” that discusses many modalities I’ve looked into and practiced and recommend:

  • Acupuncture
  • Aromatherapy
  • Biofeedback
  • Chiropractic
  • Dietary Supplements
  • Hypnosis
  • Massage Therapy
  • Meditation
  • Movement Therapy
  • Music Therapy
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation
  • Reiki
  • Spirituality, Religion, and Prayer
  • Yoga

Though EFT is not listed among these modalities, nor could I find any reference to it when I searched their journals — I did find links to EFT when I searched their site, however it was related to something called, Emotion-Focused Therapy, not Emotional Freedom Technique. And all of the previous list of modalities are excellent for a variety of issues, or health related projects, but only a few have helped me to direct my focus and attention on my food choice and movement (exercise) enough to enable me to lose weight (and keep it off).

If you check here you will find that Hypnosis is a “relaxed, focused state of concentration.  It involves focusing attention and awareness inward.” This seems quite like meditation to me! The hypnotic state allows you to relax, rest your sympathetic nervous system, lower blood pressure, slow your heart rate, and “increase alpha and theta brain wave activity.” We’ve all probably seen people being hypnotized on TV and know that while they are in a trance, they are highly suggestible. Hypnotism allows one to more easily reach into one’s own subconscious mind. Thus, if while hypnotized we are accessing a deeper level of mind, this could give us the ability to change our perception of certain things and adjust our behavior, quite similar to EFT.

It occurs to me that since Hypnosis was pioneered by German physician Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer this may be where the word “mesmerized” may come from, when we think of anything that puts us into a trance-like state.

Emotional Freedom Technique™ (EFT) was developed by Gary Craig to “resolve negative emotions and trauma by tapping on various acupressure points.” EFT is the main self help tool I use to modify and limit my negative emotional responses to life problems. I highly doubt the current kinds of EFT and Tapping being practiced would not be possible without the pioneering work of Dr. Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy.  EFT has been useful in helping one eliminate fears and phobias, overcome traumas, manage anger and pain, resolve sadness or grief, lift such addictions as nail biting and smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, gain self-esteem, and better equip one to handle other types of physical problems.

You have the power to easily make the important “brain changes” to override your genes… and meet your goals and EFT can help!
