It can’t hurt

It can’t hurt

“It can’t hurt” has been a guiding principle for me for many years. A philosophy that I have applied in many areas of my life, in particular to new strategies in business and in health matters.

Health strategies that can’t hurt

Eat more nutritious food

One of the easiest and best things each of us can do to live a healthier life, is simply to eat more nutritious food, preferably quality organic, local, fresh foods. It can’t hurt.

Move more

Another easy way to improve our health is to move more. I’m not talking about going from couch potato to marathon runner overnight, but start with 5 minutes and increase your movement (calisthenics, walking, dance, yoga, qigong, or such), everyday until you can build up to 40 minutes of movement. Measure and monitor yourself. If you ease into movement, it can’t hurt.

Meditate

Yes, the opposite of moving is stillness. Take control over your mind and body to sit quietly for a few minutes each day and focus on your breath. The new science is showing positive results, yes, physical improvements, from simply meditating. Try it. It can’t hurt.

Detoxify

A grand strategy that everyone can do is to detox. Pick your favorite detoxifying method and do it regularly. Once a year, quarterly, or monthly. We all get too many chemicals in us, via breathing, food, water, what we wear, and what we put on our skin. It can’t hurt.

Holistic health & Holism

I was telling my daughter the other day that pharmaceutical drugs always have side effects. That’s one reason I don’t take any—and if I have to, then I always make pharma meds a last resort. My health plan is to always go with the least toxic option first, because it can’t hurt.

Try some new self-care techniques. Speak loving and kind words to your body. The cells of your body are listening! And it can’t hurt.

Connection matters.

My self-care tip: When you go to the bathroom, give yourself a foot massage! Cross one leg over the other and massage your foot including your toes! Switch legs and repeat on the other side. If you work involved standing all day, I bet you’ll thank me for this tip! And if you sit all day, this re-establishes blood flow. It can’t hurt.

Hug yourself. Hug someone everyday. And put your hands together when you pray. It connects the circuits—our circuitry. It can’t hurt.

Sound and light therapies can ease tense muscles, relieve headaches, and improve many ills. Look for some of these to try. It can’t hurt.

Whenever you have a minor health issue, reach for your essential oils, Renew28, ASEA, CBD oil, or other health supplement. Sometimes I find I have the solution to whatever ails me, in my bathroom cabinets! And it doesn’t hurt to apply most of these remedies in new ways—consult your trusted holistic health team for advice if you’re unsure.

Measure & Track your progress

Measure and monitor yourself. Save some money and coach yourself. Yes, I know a personal trainer can show you the proper form and ways to exercise, but once you learn the basics, all they do is motivate you by measuring your weights and time. And you can do that for yourself. Same with personal coaches too.

Write 3 things down on a whiteboard that you want to improve about your life. Assign a number from 1-10 how you feel about each of those things. Give yourself a date by which to accomplish the change you desire. Figure out what steps you need to take to achieve those results. Break the goal into bite-size, measurable chunks, and stay focused on reaching your goal by reminding yourself why you want to change. You got this. And it can’t hurt to try it for yourself before you hire someone else to coach you. You may find that you were more capable than you thought!

Trying to lose weight? Try intermittent fasting. Also a form of detoxing, fasting for 12-16 hours a day or skipping a dinner every other day, has worked for me. And fasting can be especially wonderful for women over 40 (as it resets the metabolism). It can’t hurt to give it a try.

Oh, snap! Natural Health and Wellness is big business

In 2005, when I began writing a holistic, natural health and wellness book, I set a Google alert for simply, “natural health and wellness.” And I’d get an email from the alert every few days with one or two results.

But yesterday, I realized the email often contains twenty or more results!

In the years I’ve been writing my book (and blog articles because everything changes so fast), the industry has taken off in a big way–and I’m seeing an even larger market for my book–it’s always been needed, but I didn’t think many people would be ready for it.

I am sure one of the reasons that I’ve lagged in finishing my book was due to a kind of lackluster interest. I mean, I’d talk with people about holistic health and they’d look at me like I had three eyes. Okay, I have a third eye–that has opened up in the last five years–but that’s another post for another day.

I’d try to give family or friends advice about the alternative treatments I’d been getting, the healthy organic food and clothing options, or herbal and homeopathic remedies for colds and flu, etc. Yet, most of my attempts to help were often frowned upon, sometimes I’d even be scolded! I learned to only offer suggestions when asked. And that asking wasn’t happening with any regular frequency, so I kinda gave up.

I threw my hands in the air and decided to let them spend their money on outrageously priced health insurance premiums and co-pays. After all, it was their choice.

I sat by while family and friends underwent painful medical procedures.

I read emails and Facebook posts from them. I did the best I could to remain compassionate and loving. But, I knew deep down, I had an understanding that could help, if they’d only listen.

And then today, something happened. I caught a glimmer of hope!

Awareness is E-X-P-A-N-D-I-N-G… for the general populace–about all kinds of things!

With the boomers talking about anti-aging (and how chemically-laden skin care costs a small fortune), solar energy getting easier to acquire and afford, the buzz words of green, eco-friendly, and sustainable being used all the more, the list of chronic ills growing larger by the minute (with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease seeming to lead the way), more people (college age or boomers) living in “tiny houses” or RVs full-time to downsize, live simply ,and save money, the March against Monsanto movement gaining a strong foothold (due to the multitude of bees dying), National Geographic highlighting the massive deforestation that’s been going on for some time–for all these reasons and more–masses of people are waking up!

And many of these awake and aware folks are now looking for natural health and wellness options to ease the rising tidal wave of humongous healthcare costs–better late than never in my humble opinion!

So, among other things on my daily alert, I found such things as articles on collagen peptides as a non-surgical solution to reduce facial wrinkles, how to throw a healthy dinner party, natural health trends, how many companies now make tea tree essential oil, whole body healing products like mats and pillows, and of course the latest in nutricosmetics–yes, I’d heard of nutriceuticals a few years ago and have written blog articles about some, but nutricosmetics made from natural elements was a new term for me!

When Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Jin Shin Jyutsu, and my 660nm red light therapy go mainstream, I’ll really hoot and holler!

I mean, natural health modalities of detoxification, organic food, physical therapy, hypnosis, yoga, meditation, Pilates, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, Kinesiology, colon hydrotherapy, and essential oils are fairly common now, with insurance covering acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage therapy for certain situations.

However, it may still take some time for raw vegan food, Reflexology, the Energy medicine modalities like Theta healing, Healing Touch, Reiki, Pranic healing, past life regression, and Pranayama breathing techniques to be accepted. And other more hands on or physical approaches to wellness of Feldenkrais, Cranio-Sacral, Tai Chi, Qigong, Yamuna, herbal and Bach flower remedies, biofeedback, oxygen, chelation, and stem cell therapies to become commonplace.

Note: March 21st, 2018 The Tomah, Wisconsin VA center is offering a new Tai Chi class to help veterans find relief! Yay!!

There really are (gasp–apparently), lots of people like me out there in the world who care about all this natural stuff! Haha! Yay, finally!

I knew I’d been able to buy a lot more organic food (produce, canned, and frozen items) at our local–non-health food type–grocery store, which has been especially time-saving! But, what I hadn’t realized was just how the whole “get healthy naturally” idea has blossomed!

Someday soon it seems, I may be able to buy some of the cottage industry clothing, skin care, organic recipe ingredients, and so on from our local grocery store. For now, I’ll continue to support (in alphabetical order):

Are you scared of Yoga?

Yoga isn’t just for thin and fit young women… ohh nooooo! Why then, would you be scared of Yoga?

If you’ve ever walked into a yoga studio and been made to feel anything less than beautiful, no matter your age, weight, skin tone, gender, hair color, or personal style, then honey, that group wasn’t for you anyway.

Or, if you’ve ever thought that you’re just not flexible enough to do yoga, think again! Only with practice does flexibility come. No one has ever became a yoga guru overnight! And no one will expect that perfection from you. It’s all about the progress, not perfection in yoga. No one is born a master.

In a yoga class, each of us are so busy working on getting into a posture and breathing in it, that we aren’t looking at you anyway. Sure, there may be the occasional glance, but our purpose in class is to focus on self, breathe and connect with our own mind and body, all the while feeling the support and building our confidence by feeling supported by a caring teacher who will guide us.

This is why I delightfully invite you, if you’re anywhere near the Tampa Bay area of Florida, to meet Dr. Ronald Porter and come to one of his uplifting classes.

I attended Dr. Porter’s “Yoga FUNdamentals!” class yesterday (one of the series of experiential learning classes he offers on a monthly basis at Miracles Metaphysical bookstore in St. Petersburg, FL) and he did a brilliant joy (er, job) of leading an older group of us (many of whom had never moved their bodies much at all, much less had done yoga before) in yoga. Plus, he taught us how he came to learn and teach yoga, the proper way the positions (asanas) are done, the Sanskrit words for each asana, and how to modify it for our body and ability. We moved very slowly, breathed, and held the asana for 3 to 5 minutes.

I woke up this morning feeling ten years younger, lighter, and with no muscle soreness at all! In fact, yoga can help you live longer, because with a flexible spine you’ll be able to do more, and not hurt when you bend over and pick something up from the floor. With practice, yoga will enable your body to flex, thus allowing  you to feel younger! Yoga is a process. But, it won’t take long, with consistent practice, for you to feel, and then see, a transformation in your body.

In the Fundamentals playshop, Dr. Ronald K. Porter lead us in an exploration of the basic philosophy and fundamental poses of yoga.  We all learned and practiced right along with him. We smiled, and laughed. It was experiential! And it was fun!

During Ronald’s class, we could obviously see Ronald’s mastery of yoga, yet we could also see, hear, and feel that this master has transcended ego. He never made us feel “less than” anything! In fact, because Ronald says, “beautiful” so much during class, he has me saying it more now in my everyday life. Positivity abounds!

The journey of yoga is a lifelong process, and the student who is open to this process can experience an entirely new readjustment and realignment in their life.  We invite you to laugh and have fun learning this wonderful technique for better health! People have diminished or eliminated anxiety, eased stress, calmed nerves, and lessened depression by practicing yoga. Some have even replaced their smoking habit, or other addictive habit with yoga–it’s very beneficial for you since it’s all about the mind-body connection. And if you’re on prescription medication for a chronic health issue, over time, you may find you’ll need less of those meds!*

If you’re taught properly, yoga is simply about connecting your breath to your body.

Yoga means “to yoke with”. The history of yoga indicates it was thought that by practicing yoga you could enter a meditative, contemplative state of mind, and establish right relationship with God, or the Divine. Whether you want to explore yoga for spiritual reasons, or to relieve your body of pain or chronic dis-ease, don’t let anyone judge you into not coming to a yoga class.

If you aren’t local to our area, or for any reason whatsoever still scared to try a public yoga class, you can always go to YouTube or Gaiam TV online and find a beginner video to watch. Begin moving your body in rhythm with your breath. Do five minutes of yoga. Then build to ten minutes, and so on. Until you feel ready to come out and join a group. The energy you’ll feel while in a group experience is so much richer than going it alone, that within a couple sessions, you’ll really enjoy it.

Yoga is for everyone!  Whether your tall, short, round, thin, male, female or transgender, yoga has the potential of being very beneficial for your life.  Often, when people think of yoga they imagine lean and slender persons contorting their bodies into positions that look painful, and even disturbing.  Every now and then I am even asked, “Hey, can you demonstrate that pretzel position?”  It’s sad to think that many people miss out on yoga simply because they have been led to believe it is not for them.

However, yoga is for us all!

I have overheard some people say they’re scared of yoga for religious reasons. Well, that is simply misinformation. If you’re thinking that a yoga teacher is going to attempt to convert you into becoming a mystic, read this.

Some of you may feel intimidated at the thought of yoga, but again, everybody has to start somewhere. We’ve all been new. It’s really okay! Just start wherever you are! And if you tried a class somewhere and felt pressured to perform a posture that was too much for you, or worse, you were called out in any way, you have my assurance — you will not feel that way in Ronald’s yoga classes.

Ronald’s soothing voice and calm manner was one of the first things that attracted me to his classes. When Ronald says to, “breathe d-e-e-p”, you will feel the tension melt away, and as you breathe deep, you’ll feel the ease of your body. I am blessed in those moments. And if I didn’t feel like I fit in when I arrived, I feel it then!

Each week, I look forward to the energy and the flow that I feel during our yoga class, the relaxation, and the healing that takes place. No one has to prod me to attend. I even sleep better after attending a yoga class!

You’ll find a group at Ronald’s classes who are kind, supportive, and loving. You may not get to know them all at once, because since yoga is about our “self” you might find more introverts practicing yoga. However, over time, as you come to class and practice next to someone, mat to mat, you will see that we are all each on our own journey. Yet, We Are All Connected.

Along my life’s journey I have learned that if I do not judge others, they do not judge me. And I think that’s a pretty good mind set and way to live, whether on or off the yoga mat.

As I sit writing this, I wonder what my focused experience of meeting Sadhguru will be like. Will it be similar to what my dear friend and angel Alania experienced and wrote about (here) last year? Will he say the same thing? Or like us, does Sadhguru continue to change and grow in the field of pure positive potentiality? Ahh…

Good-Gums tooth powder instead of toothpaste

Good-Gums tooth powder, a healthful toothpaste alternative and natural remedy, has been this author’s daily dental product for many years, reversing several gum and dental issues, as well as providing a glistening clean.

I’ve been using Good-Gums since 2013 and have naturally reversed receding gums and gingivitis! It’s hard for me to estimate just how much money and pain this wonderful Good-Gums product has saved me!!

I had been without dental insurance for about a year and a half so I had been looking for some non fluoride toothpaste (while shopping at the market) the day I was introduced to Good-Gums. The product’s creator, Isabelle Dunkeson, explained we can use Good-Gums just as easily as we use toothpaste.

 I had previously undergone deep scaling cleaning for pre-periodontal disease and gingivitis! I certainly did NOT want to go through that ordeal again as it was quite painful (even with the numbing shots)! So, if that’s your issue, also consider gently brushing (or better yet, “massaging”) your gums.

So, I bought a bottle of Good-Gums and took it home. I followed the instructions and brushed faithfully – including my gums – daily. A couple of months went by. I noticed I was having a lot less bleeding when I flossed. I also noticed the tooth sensitivity I had previously experienced was GONE.

After moving, starting a new job, and getting dental insurance again I went to a new dentist. He took the normal X-rays and gave me a thorough exam. I had NO cavities and NO sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease! NONE!

I must admit I was surprised. I knew I had been doing a good job with brushing and flossing (but I do not floss daily either as I know I should) and I had noticed that with Good-Gums my teeth always felt CLEAN – just like they do after a dental cleaning, but I really didn’t expect such a good report. Now I only wish I had been using Good-Gums my whole life!

When I did return to a dentist for a cleaning and to repair a crown, the new dental hygienist who cleaned my teeth didn’t even scold me for not flossing! Every previous cleaning I had always been scolded for not flossing daily. But now, it’s sure seems like Good-Gums had been doing such a good job for me that my lack of flossing didn’t matter! Now, I’m not suggesting you don’t need to floss, but at least for me, I found it did not matter that I had skipped some days!

Yay!

I’ve returned many times to visit with Isabelle to get the whole scoop on Good-Gums and how she brought this fantastic health product to market. Eventually, I was honored to be interviewed by Phil Pagano of the Sarasota Farmer’s Market on behalf of Isabelle and Good-Gums.

I am happy to help this small company in any way I can to promote this amazing product that definitely has materialized via these folks “putting your money where your mouth is” and utilizing a grassroots type of marketing and promotion.

So let me share with you how Good-Gums came to be produced. When Isabelle Dunkeson originally formulated Good-Gums she thought she was only doing so to alleviate her own gum issues. Little did she know just how many people she would help, how many people’s gum issues would reverse, and how many teeth she’d save! I’d be thrilled if one persondoesn’t have to undergo dental or gum surgery from reading this article – so I know Isabelle lives a joyous life knowing how many people she’s helped! Isabelle’s Good-Gums formula not only cured her own dental issues but it’s helped so many others – including me!

In fact, in the Jan 2012 issue of the HSI newsletter I became fascinated with an article written by Michele Cagan that recounted the miraculous healing experience of a lady named Winnie Burke. Winnie was quoted as saying, “He (her dentist) told me I’d lose every one of my teeth. But I knew they were already getting better.” The article outlined Winnie’s experience in detail – to summarize, Winnie had very loose teeth when a friend suggested she try Good-Gums. Apparently she had a dental checkup just after beginning to use Good-Gums tooth powder. So when the dentist told her something contrary to what she was already beginning to experience (from a short time of using Good-Gums) that her teeth seemed to be tighter in her gums, she began to question his desire to perform gum surgery even if he pulled her teeth! You see, Good-Gums can help strengthen gums and save your loose teeth!

That particular article presents information many of us have encountered and it’s also something I talk about often. A doctor or dentist tells us something that just doesn’t quite feel true or right to us and almost bully us (because they wear the white coat and have degrees) into believing their knowledge trumps ours. But the moral of the story is, Winnie continued using Good-Gums and did not return to the dentist for three years. She never lost any of her teeth and saved herself from gum surgery! When she finally returned for a checkup the dental hygienist was surprised that after such a long time between visits Winnie had no pockets between her teeth and gums, minimal plaque, and NO cavities!

So what’s in Good-Gums and why is it so special? Well, part of the reason Good-Gums works so incredibly well is that it DOES NOT contain:

  • Glycerin
  • Fluoride
  • Toxic Chemicals
  • Harsh abrasives
  • Artificial ingredients

The reason Good-Gums works so beautifully is that it ONLY contains 100% non-toxic ingredients that contribute to healthy teeth and gums, such as:

  • French grey sea salt

Salt – not just any salt though. The French grey sea salt is ground to a very fine specification to limit abrasion; its known for it’s high mineral content and lowest sodium content.

  • Cinnamon

Cinnamon – Herbalists have used cinnamon for years to aid infants who experience teething pain because it offers mild anesthetic properties, along with antimicrobial action.

  • Cranberry

Vitamin-C promotes healing of the connective tissue which, holds your teeth in place. Connective tissue depends on collagen, and collagen cannot be produced without vitamin-C! So the whole discussion about teeth not being bones, that kind of goes out the window when you think about this: you can’t have your teeth without the connective tissue that holds them in place!

  • Bio-flavinoid complex

Naturally occurring plant metabolites that possess the ability to neutralize reactive oxygen stabilizing molecules and breaking the oxidative chain – in other words, they are plant based antioxidants.

  • Peppermint

Peppermint for pain relief, calcium, magnesium, and other trace minerals. The peppermint herb is easily absorbed and soothing on the gums.

Finally, let’s talk about one of my favorite ingredients in Good-Gums:

  • Myrrh

Myrrh is a wonderfully ancient remedy referred to many times in the Bible and used in Germany and England to this day as an approved treatment for gingivitis is a highly beneficial ingredient in Good-Gums. Many of my readers know that I am a Young Living therapeutic essential oil distributor so yes, I know much about the healthy benefits of myrrh and other oils. Our medicine cabinet mostly only contains these helpful oils.

When I say “pure” ingredients the company that manufactures and bottles Good-Gums adheres to all the same standards and regulations as a pharmaceutical company does.

This product is so pure and natural, even pregnant women can use Good-Gums. It is well known that a baby extracts calcium and other minerals and nutrients from it’s mother’s food supply but perhaps also possibly robbing calcium or other minerals from her bones (though reportedly not from teeth – though bones and teeth are made of calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals). If a pregnant woman is not eating a nutritionally sound diet, the mom-to-be is very much encouraged by her obstetrician to take prenatal vitamins. But what is missed? Does the doctor refer her to a dentist, or other qualified dental practitioner to ensure the health of her teeth while she’s expecting? If she’s low on vitamin-C as I note above, then this could be the reason women who’ve had many pregnancies are correlated with having lost more teeth! You didn’t know that I’m a scientist, now did you? Ha!

Many men lose their teeth for a variety of reasons too! So, I realize pregnancy is not the only reason we need to use Good-Gums. In fact, every tooth is connected to a meridian in the body! You can Google “Meridian Tooth Chart” to learn more about the connection between teeth and acupuncture.

If you’ve ever wondered why some people do not ever have cavities or bad breath it may be due to their having a healthy gut, which means they have good intestinal flora. You can build up good gut flora by eating one cultured living food a day like yogurt, kefir, etc. Also, these people no doubt have a healthy biofilm on their teeth (in a healthy mouth every tooth has a film around it called a biofilm) and those people never have any dental problems. The ingredients in Good-Gums encourages a healthy biofilm – does your regular toothpaste?

An acquaintance of mine mentioned that she has receding gums and that her dental hygienist suggested that she should brush multiple times a day because of it. I commented, “so much for 40 years of fluoride huh?” (always my subtle way of saying it hasn’t been of any help – people still get cavities, root canals, crowns, bridges, and dentures as much as they always did) and she began to tell me about the importance of the deep cleaning ever three months!

When people are very strong in their belief system, I try not to get into a long conversation or enlighten them about alternatives. Pressing too hard about any particular subject usually either offends the person, or they won’t listen anyway. Also it seems to me that if what you are doing is working for you, who am I to question it. Go ahead! But for me, I would rather not go to the dentist, and not have that painful deep scaling and root planing. YUCK! I mean, I had a really good dentist and hygienist where we used to live, but even as good as they were, I prefer Good-Gums and my new brushing method better!

I really don’t want to knock your dentist, but honestly if fluoride was helpful, after 40+ years of it being pumped into our water and toothpaste – why would anyone get cavities? Whose interest is it in to keep us going back to the dentist? I certainly do NOT enjoy going to the dentist for crowns, bridges, and so forth! Lots of pain and EXPENSE!

Regular toothpaste that contains fluoride and other toxins is your mouth’s worst enemy because all it does is kill your teeth. Fluoride is plain old poison. Just read the label on YOUR current toothpaste! You’re encouraged not to swallow it, and to call poison control if you do! Unfortunately, it gets worse.

Toothpaste keeps Good-Gums from working effectively. Why?

Most toothpastes contain glycerin (even the ones found in health food stores) and glycerin actually coats teeth with a film that prevents your saliva from re-mineralizing your teeth! Yes, your body knows how to naturally heal and repair your teeth! Our body grows our teeth and heals a cut on our skin, so why should this concept shock you? If your teeth aren’t re-mineralizing it could be because of the glycerin in those products that coat the teeth.

Not only are fluoride and glycerin bad, but regular toothpaste contains harsh abrasives, preservatives, etc. Why eat organic food and then brush with pesticide and chemically laden toothpaste? Makes no sense to me!

You brush your teeth everyday, so even if you only absorb a small amount of the toxins and chemicals found in drugstore and grocery store toothpaste, you’re getting dosed twice a day, every day of your life!

Feeling so much better! Therapeutic massage with Tiffiny

I am honored and blessed to know Tiffiny C. Rudkin, LMT of Jade Tree Wellness Center Inc. I’ve had massages before, all wonderful, but Tiffiny has raised the bar for sure! In fact, she’s more than a massage therapist, she’s an”Ailment Alleviator.”

My experience with Tiffiny today (similar to my first visit) left me invigorated, breathing better, relaxed, ready to shop a bit, and then clean the house (when I got home later)!

I drank plenty of water afterwards too! It’s wise to drink plenty of water after receiving healthful bodywork in order to flush out any toxins and other unnecessary accumulations released from your muscles.

Tiffiny performs Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, and Trigger Point Therapy–finding points on my back that I didn’t even know were sore until she found them! As well, she does Esalen Relaxation Massage, Cupping, and Tui Na.

Tiffiny used the cupping on me in a different way than I’d ever had done before also. She actually used a silicone cup to massage my back and release contracted muscles, which improves blood and lymphatic circulation. I also learned from Tiffiny that the way she uses the cup during massage prevents the temporary red circles from forming that I’ve known cupping can often leave on the skin.

Tiffiny knew she had a knack and passion for the healing arts, and thus became a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in 2009. I asked how long she had been performing massage therapy, where she’d went to school, and how long it took. I have often considered going to massage school myself, but I am older than Tiffiny and my hands are not as strong as hers! Perhaps I should stick to typing! Haha!

As well as all of the therapies previously mentioned, Tiffiny also practices Craniosacral therapy, which is a light pressure modality used to achieve deep, cellular level relief and may also help with depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Tiffiny works on Triathlon athletes using sports massage, pregnant women with pregnancy massage, and chair massage. With Craniosacral therapy, she can do mouthwork both inside and outside the mouth, which can be good for headaches, migraines, and TMJ dysfunction.

If you’ve had a massage, you know that you can feel how muscles seem to get “knots” or bumps in them. I actually had a couple of these in my back, on my shoulders, that I hadn’t realized, but Tiffiny’s focused therapeutic bodywork on these really helped to loosen them. She also worked on my neck quite a bit, which has had a kink or catch in it for several weeks. It’s totally released now and my singing rehearsal today went exceedingly well! I’m so stoked about realizing the wonderful benefits that massage can have on my breathing and vocal ability!

When I asked Tiffiny about massage later, she told me that she is an “Ailment Alleviator” and I believe her! And my belief is built from experience. Tiffiny’s client centered approach, and focus that’s specific to your body is outstanding! I think you’ll be amazed!

Just what is Tibetan Bowl Sound Therapy?

For anyone who has ever felt emotional while listening to a piece of music, or experienced an over all better feeling in the body by singing, I think John and Maria’s Tibetan Bowl Sound Therapy (provided at Awakening Wellness Center in St. Petersburg, Florida) will intrigue you!

I wanted to write about this wellness treatment before actually experiencing it, so I could document about what I think it is, and what I’ve read about it, and compare it to my actual experience. I want you to know that I’m right there with you in this moment of asking, “What IS Tibetan Bowl Sound Therapy”?

Everything vibrates.

Well, if you think back to your middle, junior, or high school days (depending upon when and where you went to school) you may remember that everything in the universe vibrates. The chair you’re sitting on is made up of vibrating molecules, and so are you. You are in a constant state of “be-ing”. 

Our five senses are adept at translating those vibrations, or frequencies, into sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures. Sight-impaired persons are quite adept at translating vibration while listening to music in order to dance or play a musical instrument. We do not all interpret vibration in exactly the same way. And sensitive types can feel the most subtle of vibrational energies.

Do you know that sound can be therapeutic?

Sound is penetrating – able to reach into our body, into our cells, and allow our muscles to relax, our cells to release blocks (think of how emotions can get trapped in our body over time, contributing to stiff, tight muscles, and so forth). Massage therapists talk about trapped emotions in the body — and is why some people cry during a massage (as they release past emotional wounds and traumas)! Sound therapy can do the same thing — perhaps even more since sound can travel to and through the body where massage can only go so far.

Tibetan Bowl Sound Therapy produces specific tones (or frequencies) that resonate deep into your body. The harmonics of the tones can help you experience a connection throughout your entire body. And when we feel “connected”, a sense of calm and relaxation can be achieved.

Sound therapy has been studied for its effectiveness and has been helpful in reducing stress, enhance one’s peace and calm, as well as, contributing to your well being. Sound has been researched and believed to aid our body’s own healing process and can be a wonderful complementary modality for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to help manage one’s side effects (including pain relief).

Person’s with fibromyalgia may feel relief, others who are sad or upset may feel lighter or more tranquil, and those with chronic fatigue syndrome (who have taken the herbal supplement rhodiola and not found improvement) may also note feeling more energy after a session. Some people say their mind is clearer, or that they can remember things easier after a sound therapy session. Others say they can rest easier. Often the effects of a therapy session last for several days.

Is this backed by hard science?

To a degree. Brain waves have been measured by scientists for many years. And scientists say that while we’re awake our normal brain frequency is in something called, Beta. Certain sound tools, or modalities can train the brain to shift into deeper Alpha and Theta brain wave frequencies. These are the frequencies one experiences after deep contemplative, mindful, or other types of meditative practices. 

Science can measure brain waves and make a correlation between sound therapy and the body’s healing response. Thus, sound is a type of energy medicine and can help the body heal from pain, stress, and more.

The bones and organs in the body all possess a different resonant frequency that can be scientifically measured.

We know from physics that sound can impact your autonomic nervous system.

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, D.C., B.F.A. has stated that “human hearing is between 20 and 20,000 hertz. Anything below 20 hertz is not sound anymore. But, there are brain waves, such as alpha, beta, delta, gamma, theta, and so on.” It’s probably why there’s a saying, “ring my bell” that’s slang for pleasing someone.

Dr. Thompson, using medical monitoring devices, believes he has found a way to use sound frequency to “pick the lock of a neuroprogram” and open the healing program to the (delta) physical, (alpha) mental, (theta) emotional, (epsilon, or gamma, or hyper-gamma) spiritual, and such and remove any stress response (in the brain) and allow the body to heal.

Can the body ever be in a non-harmonious state?

Yes, and in holistic medicine when some part of the mind, body, or spirit is out of sync, out of tune, or otherwise vibrating non-harmoniously, from what would otherwise be normal for that unique body, it is labeled to have a certain “dis-ease”. When all cells of your body are healthy and your immune system is functioning at its peak, each organ creates a resonance that is in harmony with your entire being.

How is Sound Therapy used in traditional Western medicine?

Ultrasound has been used for decades as a diagnostic tool and works by bouncing sound waves off of body parts to create images.

Urologists use vibrational energy to break up stones in the urinary tract.

Lasers, otherwise known as amplified light energy, are often used in fat reduction, and other surgical procedures.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are used by radiologists. They are diagnostic tools that shift the electrons in cells. They detect radio frequency signals emitted by excited hydrogen atoms.
