Depressive thoughts?

Robyn Openshaw, aka the Green Smoothie Girl, sent an email out that speaks to exactly what I started doing mid summer 2020 that pulled me out of Lockdown depression!!

What did Robyn say?

Balance.

Yes, it’s all about Balance.

But my problem was, I didn’t reach out to Robyn (or search her blog), reach out to anyone, or even read my own book, when I experienced DEPRESSING THOUGHTS!

Thankfully, I was able to pull out of the DEEP dark hole in mind, but it was a scary time! I didn’t even cry (as I would have years ago). But my strong WILL kicked in at some point, and I told myself, “Go for a walk.” That’s right! As simple and innocuous as that sounds, just getting off my rear and stepping outside, really was the beginning to me getting my Life back!

I started noting things I noticed in Nature. I started noting new thoughts as they dropped into my mind, as I was walking.

It was hot.

I was sweaty.

I had bugs nipping at my body.

Then, I began Communing with the Trees on our property and along the dirt street while I was walking.

After a few weeks, I had started a new diet program that came my way. And I had started some new supplements.

I found a bit of relief with each step I took.

But what became even more exciting was that I began to codify my thought processes and subsequent actions.

And all of that is what I pulled together to create the loose, creative framework for others to use in building their own daily ritual(s) called, Integrated Spiral™.

Because we already have all the books, videos, podcasts, tools, and such to get ourselves healthy and happy, but not the processes in place to integrate them into each day!

And the thing is, practicing simply a few Integrated Spiral methods, the first is something I call, Gratitude F-L-O-W, you can begin to experience a mood lift! I love uplifting others. I sat in the dental chair and focused on my rose quartz heart (that I held in my hand), and I thought:

  • I love how the dental chair supports the weight of my body
  • How skilled and compassionate my oral surgeon is
  • How indeed the Universe supports me, etc., etc.
  • And for a brief moment, I felt my bluestone bracelet, and took a mental journey back to Stonehenge (where I had meditated sitting close to the bluestone)

And guess what?!?

I came out braver on the other side of it! Whew!

Rose quartz heart

All was well. ALL is well!

But, there had been those moments. Moments of unnecessary tension. Moments of uncertainty. Lost moments, that I could have been IN joy, prayer for others, or gratitude for ALL I have!

It can’t hurt

It can’t hurt

“It can’t hurt” has been a guiding principle for me for many years. A philosophy that I have applied in many areas of my life, in particular to new strategies in business and in health matters.

Health strategies that can’t hurt

Eat more nutritious food

One of the easiest and best things each of us can do to live a healthier life, is simply to eat more nutritious food, preferably quality organic, local, fresh foods. It can’t hurt.

Move more

Another easy way to improve our health is to move more. I’m not talking about going from couch potato to marathon runner overnight, but start with 5 minutes and increase your movement (calisthenics, walking, dance, yoga, qigong, or such), everyday until you can build up to 40 minutes of movement. Measure and monitor yourself. If you ease into movement, it can’t hurt.

Meditate

Yes, the opposite of moving is stillness. Take control over your mind and body to sit quietly for a few minutes each day and focus on your breath. The new science is showing positive results, yes, physical improvements, from simply meditating. Try it. It can’t hurt.

Detoxify

A grand strategy that everyone can do is to detox. Pick your favorite detoxifying method and do it regularly. Once a year, quarterly, or monthly. We all get too many chemicals in us, via breathing, food, water, what we wear, and what we put on our skin. It can’t hurt.

Holistic health & Holism

I was telling my daughter the other day that pharmaceutical drugs always have side effects. That’s one reason I don’t take any—and if I have to, then I always make pharma meds a last resort. My health plan is to always go with the least toxic option first, because it can’t hurt.

Try some new self-care techniques. Speak loving and kind words to your body. The cells of your body are listening! And it can’t hurt.

Connection matters.

My self-care tip: When you go to the bathroom, give yourself a foot massage! Cross one leg over the other and massage your foot including your toes! Switch legs and repeat on the other side. If you work involved standing all day, I bet you’ll thank me for this tip! And if you sit all day, this re-establishes blood flow. It can’t hurt.

Hug yourself. Hug someone everyday. And put your hands together when you pray. It connects the circuits—our circuitry. It can’t hurt.

Sound and light therapies can ease tense muscles, relieve headaches, and improve many ills. Look for some of these to try. It can’t hurt.

Whenever you have a minor health issue, reach for your essential oils, Renew28, ASEA, CBD oil, or other health supplement. Sometimes I find I have the solution to whatever ails me, in my bathroom cabinets! And it doesn’t hurt to apply most of these remedies in new ways—consult your trusted holistic health team for advice if you’re unsure.

Measure & Track your progress

Measure and monitor yourself. Save some money and coach yourself. Yes, I know a personal trainer can show you the proper form and ways to exercise, but once you learn the basics, all they do is motivate you by measuring your weights and time. And you can do that for yourself. Same with personal coaches too.

Write 3 things down on a whiteboard that you want to improve about your life. Assign a number from 1-10 how you feel about each of those things. Give yourself a date by which to accomplish the change you desire. Figure out what steps you need to take to achieve those results. Break the goal into bite-size, measurable chunks, and stay focused on reaching your goal by reminding yourself why you want to change. You got this. And it can’t hurt to try it for yourself before you hire someone else to coach you. You may find that you were more capable than you thought!

Trying to lose weight? Try intermittent fasting. Also a form of detoxing, fasting for 12-16 hours a day or skipping a dinner every other day, has worked for me. And fasting can be especially wonderful for women over 40 (as it resets the metabolism). It can’t hurt to give it a try.

A conversation this week with Chris Waltein, a very “tuned in” Holistic Health Practitioner at Awakening Wellness Center, and Director of Operations at Awakening Into The Sun (St. Petersburg, Florida) gave rise to this blog post! Thank you Chris, for an aWEsOMe conversation and tour of the new wellness center!
There are many easy and free things all of us can do at home that can improve our health. Most of us know and do some of these things, but we may not have tried them all–and we might be able to increase our vitality and longevity by incorporating more of these tips into our daily routine.
So, here’s a short list for consideration. Click any of the highlighted words to learn more about each:
  1. Drink more water
  2. Get more sleep
  3. Meditate
  4. Eat fresh home made meals — including raw veggies/juice
  5. Massage your body — if you live alone, you can do self massage or acupressure!
  6. Deep breathing — there are many benefits and techniques
  7. Laugh! Yes, there are real measured benefits just from laughing daily!
  8. Move you body–Any kind of movement!

Some ideas on how to get the cells of your body moving:

Yoga, Qigong, Pilates, Tai Chi, gentle stretches to improve mobility and flexibility, lunges and squats, walk (either alone or with a neighbor or friend), run, dance, garden, walking meditation, stair climb, swim, golf, play any kind of sport, etc.
There are many ways to get your blood and lymph moving (some within a very small place)! Always go at your own pace and be kind to yourself — there’s no competition, just move a little more every day and measure your improvements!
While practicing deep breathing you can add any of the following healing energy medicine modalities, such as: Jin Shin Jyutsu, EFT or Reiki to calm, relax, and rejuvenate your body.
There are many aspects to yoga. You might want to begin with the yoga postures (how you move your body) and progress to the other mind-body and spiritual enlightenment aspects. I would recommend you to find a well-rounded yoga teacher and take some classes. I initially learned yoga when I was a teenager, by watching x on television.
Many years later, I took an in-person class and there was a world of difference! Dr. Alison J. Kay teaches a more complete yoga because she was trained in India as an Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, and also trained as a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher of 200 hours (RYT-200).
Pilates has been a modality that I’ve only recently explored. I take classes at Blue Sage Pilates in Bradenton, Florida and I LOVE IT! I can’t say enough about how it’s gently strengthened my muscles, increased my flexibility, and enabled me to breathe much better! It’s so much more healing than I ever knew! It’s not just for dancers. Anyone, young or old, can learn and practice Pilates for health. I highly recommend it!
Now, take out a pen and paper. Jot down some of the things you want to improve about your physical body. Try one or two of the things from this article that you aren’t currently doing. Give it a couple weeks, and then write down all of the improvements.
